Today’s picture from Weatherzone got us digging into the vaults – you may need to be crazy, desperate or just keen, but you can ski Mt Wellington / Kunanyi!
Our Tassie Guru Shaun Mittwollen even went night skiing there for this addition to his main Tassie features in our 2017 ‘Wild South’ issue.
There are some short – very short – lines to be picked out among the massive boulders at the top if you get lucky with a dump like today.
Probably the best night ski view in Australia that’s for sure!
Despite so many options when it’s on for amazingly spectacular back country skiing and riding like Cradle Mountain, Tassie has just two lift served ski areas: commercial Ben Lomond near Launceston, which offers a great beginner/family fun environment with a few t-bars and on snow accommodation over a 90m vertical; and Mt Mawson club field, which runs rope tows staffed by club volunteers on weekends when there’s enough snow, with some decent terrain options.
It’s about 90 minutes drive from Hobart, then a 30 minute walk in from the car park, but you can ski back to the car afterwards.
Unfortunately at this stage Mawson won’t operate due to the difficulties for the volunteer ski patrol to operate safely in a COVID-19 environment as detailed in the update to our Mawson feature.
