Anyone who has travelled internationally with skis knows that the journey there and back is hard on your gear. Airport staff don’t really care, it gets thrown on a pile and thrown on the conveyor belt. It can get wrecked very easily. After taking The North Face Base Camp Snow Roller through a series of multi-stop trips that included Los Angeles, Sapporo, Geneva and Heathrow airports, this bag proved to be a dependable and surprisingly user-friendly travel companion.

Avoiding Excess Baggage Fees: The Adjustable Length

The first thing that stands out is its versatility. One trip involved a single pair of skis, the next was travelling with multiple skis and gear stuffed into every crevice. The Base Camp Snow Roller adapted easily to both scenarios thanks to its adjustable length, which extends from 145cm to 195cm. We’ve been caught out before, depending on the airline, they can charge you if your ski roller bag is too long and we’ve stood there rolling the roller bag down by hand until airport staff were satisfied the length was short enough. We weren’t so lucky with the other stiffer and older roller bag, so we’ve learnt our lesson. That was an expensive mistake taking the older, stiffer bag.

Transit Handling and Transit Wheels

The smooth-rolling wheels handled long terminal walks, train stations and hotel transfers without complaint. We sure smashed them everywhere and were relentless. After being dragged through some of the world’s busiest transport hubs, the wheels still looked and performed remarkably well.

The adjustable pull handle also deserves credit. Whether the bag was packed with one pair of skis or loaded to near capacity, it remained fairly comfortable to pull either by hand or at one point I skipped it over my shoulder. Lifting the bag onto luggage belts, shuttle buses and airport trolleys was straightforward. The 360-degree padded handles are particularly useful when manoeuvring a fully loaded bag in tight spaces.

Durability

Durability is clearly one of the bag’s strengths. Built from The North Face’s proven Base Camp materials, it feels robust enough to withstand knocks and scrapes of international travel. I would not use a bag that is not hardy, I’m just not that kind of traveller, sometimes I need to bolt for the next flight (surprisingly often) but despite repeated flights and transfers, there was little sign of wear, which inspires confidence when expensive ski equipment is packed inside.

161 Litres of Storage and Smart Features

Storage capacity is generous. With a volume of 161 litres, the bag can comfortably accommodate two pairs of skis or a snowboard and a pair of skis making it well suited to couples, families or gear-heavy travellers. Internal straps help keep equipment secure, while a mesh pocket provides a convenient place for smaller essentials. Helpful touches such as reflective loops, an ID window and ski-length markers on the exterior add to its practicality.

Sustainability has also been considered, with the bag incorporating recycled polyester and nylon materials along with a non-PFC water-repellent finish. While most buyers will focus on performance and durability, it’s good to see environmental considerations included without compromising functionality.

The Verdict

For skiers and snowboarders looking for a reliable travel bag, the Base Camp Snow Roller delivers where it matters most. It’s lightweight for its size, easy to manoeuvre, highly adaptable and tough enough to survive the realities of international ski travel. After thousands of kilometres on the move, it’s become one piece of equipment we’d happily pack for the next snow adventure.
