Take a HINT, We’re not going away and we’re not going quietly! Celebrating Milestone Birthdays in Queenstown because it’s an excellent idea and someone said we ‘should all go overseas together’. Well, be careful what you wish for. Read on for tips to maximise living large.

Not everyone wants a quiet dinner and a nice bottle of red to mark a milestone birthday. For some, turning 30, 40, 50, 60 or beyond is the perfect excuse to gather a mad crew, head somewhere epic, and do life properly. If that sounds like your group, it might be time to look at Queenstown.

For Australians, it’s one of the easiest international snow destinations to pull together. Short flight, seamless transfers, no language barrier, and a cool town that’s built for exactly this kind of trip, equal parts skiing, dining, adventure and downtime. And it’s super pretty.

The key? Don’t overthink it. Put the idea out there, send the invites, lock in a base and let the week unfold.

Start With Your Base, Go From There

Queenstown works because it gives you flexibility. You don’t have to commit to one mountain or one version of the trip. Everyone can ski, or no-one can ski. Bring your kids, don’t bring your kids, bring your wheelchair, don’t bring your wheelchair, you do you.

Choose accommodation that suits your group dynamic, central for walkability, or slightly out of town for space and views. From there, everything is within reach.

Walkable: Want to stay central, properties like the Millennium Hotel Queenstown are comfortable, and well-located to walk to town for group dinners, shopping and après.

Group dinners and views – Want to stay together without sacrificing space or style? Platinum Queenstown Villas are great for lake views, multiple bedrooms and open living spaces.

Which snow resort ? One of the advantages of basing yourself in Queenstown is the flexibility of being quite central to many snowfields. Lock in resort choices in advance, based on weather forecasts and conditions and buy lift passes in advance for cost advantage. Or take a fluid approach and decide each morning which mountain to head to, depending on snowfall, visibility and group energy vibes.

Gear hire? Bring your own gear or rent locally. If you’re travelling light, services like Snowbiz make it easy, with quality equipment and fitting sorted when you arrive.

From Queenstown, you have access to multiple ski areas:

  • Coronet Peak Ski Area for fast laps and close proximity
  • The Remarkables Ski Area for variety and views
  • Cardrona Alpine Resort for longer cruiser runs and a day trip feel

Ski Your Way

This isn’t a hardcore, first-chair-or-nothing kind of trip, unless you want it to be. Start some days early, On other days, sleep in and have a late breakfast and a few cruisy runs and a long lunch. Strong skiers and boarders can clock up some vertical or even go heli-skiing, while newer skiers can have a lesson and build confidence. And if someone doesn’t ski at all? They can bring (or hire) a mountain bike, cruise the mountain bike trails around Queenstown.

Days Off Done Right

Build in a couple of non-ski days. You’ll want them in a place like Queenstown. One option is to get out of town, Central Otago’s wine region is right on your doorstep. A guided wine or gin tour takes the logistics out of it as they pick you up or drop you off at your accommodation!

If you stay local, Queenstown’s dining and shopping scene holds its own. Book a few group dinners in advance, key spots fill quickly in winter and leave space for spontaneous nights out.

This is where milestone trips come into their own. long tables, share plate, stories that get better as the night goes on and the fish that are caught get bigger.

For the Adventurous

For groups that want a bit more, Queenstown does not hold back. Start with the zipline experience at Ziptrek Ecotours. It’s one of those activities that sounds intimidating, but isn’t. You can choose your level, easing into it before building up to longer runs. The guides are part of the experience, layering in stories about the region’s history, ecology and landscape as you move through the forest. You may want to plant a tree when you’re finished, you’ll be that inspired.

Then there’s iFLY Queenstown and this is where things get interesting. Every group has one person who takes it seriously, trying to perfect the form. The rest? There will be that one person who takes things too far but you’ll be laughing, good naturally through your iFLY experience, figuring out how to stay upright while experiencing that surreal, weightless feeling, all while wearing a blue boilersuit (no glamour here).

Still got some energy in you? It’s Shotover Jet time. Running through the narrow canyons of the Shotover River, this is Queenstown high-adrenaline style. Skim through braided channels inches from rock walls at serious speed, held together by expert driving and the theory that psychopaths have better things to do than drive jet boats. First one to scream buys dinner?  www.shotoverjet.com/

Transport
