Post-skiing blues in the NSW snowies
Words: Emma Wilson
What do people DO in snow towns when the snow melts and the sun comes out?
Head to snow towns and enjoy all the non-snow activities on offer. There is SO much to do, it’s a great time to be in the mountains, whether you’re enjoying the natural environment or popping into bars and restaurants for lunch or dinner.
Hiking
Thredbo has great tracks to walk to suit a family of all ages. Mt Kosciuszko summit, Merritts Track or book a guided walk. Perisher Resort has walks you may not know about. Walk out to Ngarigo Rocks on the Snowies Alpine Walk, choose 2.7km or a 10km walk to Charlottes Pass. Mountainwarehouse has great products for hiking, such as hiker walking poles, waterproof jackets, socks, backpacks and everything else you might need and have a SALE on everything for camping and hiking.
Horse Riding
An iconic must-do family activity is a trail ride into the mountains, & Nev and Linda run a fantastic business at Thredbo Valley Horse Riding. Their beautiful beasts include beautiful Brumbies saved from a previous life and as mild and agreeable as could be.
Ride nose-to-tail upwards into the mountain area, crossing a creek and exploring the lower alpine area. Horses at Thredbo Horse Riding get rotated regularly, depending on demand, they are well cared for and Linda and Nev, who run their business from a hut that used to be the Penderghast family home, are passionate about not only the gorgeous brumbies, the care of the horses but the local environment as well. Thredbo Valley Horse Riding offer 1 hour to half day rides as well as disability rides available.
