Hotel Pension Grimus is the ideal choice at Mt Buller for a ski holiday for two or the whole family.
This renowned, multi award winning boutique hotel has an enviable ski in, ski out location only 50m from the ABOM Chairlift on the Bourke St ski run and 100m from the Mt Buller Ski School.
Hotel Pension Grimus easily lives up to its iconic status on the mountain with its traditional Austrian ski lodge ambience and attentive European hospitality, thanks to the Grimus family owners and their staff.
Expect delightfully decorated chalet style hotel rooms with spa ensuites and spacious, luxuriously appointed, self contained apartments.
Hans Grimus was a true legend of the Australian ski fields, who spent many years as mountain manager when he was famous for skiing round Buller with his dog. He also kept the mountain running even in the snowiest winter Australia ever experienced, back in 1964, when he used to ski out to his t-bar crew with schnapps to keep them going through the night of digging out duties to keep things running.
His aprés hospitality entertained generations of guests, including many celebrities.
At Snow Action we were fortunate enough to have shared some of those great times over the past nearly 30 years of – like so many others – counting him as a friend.
Having left Austria in the depressed 1950s he came to Australia and inevitably gravitated to the mountains. Where he set to work.
“You know a lot of people say I have been lucky. But you know, the harder you work the luckier you get” he told us once, and it sums up his philosophy and that of many of his generation of migrants to Australia.
Sadly he passed away in 2018, farewelled by thousands at his beloved Buller. Australia’s ski industry lost one of its greatest figures.
The family hospitality is legendary, and takes the experience of staying at Pension Grimus to another level.
Lotte Grimus and her son Anton, a World Cup and dual-Olympic Skier X racer for Australia, are continuing the tradition.
Anton has already added a few touches of his own in recent years – like the hole in the wall Grimus Grind coffee stop which serves as good a coffee as you will get on the mountain in a ski past location – perfect for the morning shot or refuel anytime. For those who don’t know Australia, Melbourne is the coffee culture capital, so at nearby Buller your coffee has to be great to rate!
After a day on the piste, unwind in the sauna and spa complex before heading to Herbie’s cocktail bar and its impressive collection of imported schnapps. Some guests find it difficult to move from the bar, but trying the regional, produce driven cuisine with an Austrian twist in Kaptans Restaurant is worth the effort.
The Grimus Ski Centre conveniently located on the ground floor of the hotel, has long opening hours, competitive rates, professional fitting staff and a large range of quality equipment suitable for all skiers and snowboarders.
