What is it that makes this resort at the northern end of the Hakuba Valley so popular with locals and Australians?

Space

Tsugaike Mountain Resort has built a loyal following through word of mouth as a place where you can actually take up space and escape lift lines. Slightly removed from the main Hakuba hub, it’s a relaxed, almost old-school experience, something regular visitors genuinely value.

Terrain

Tsugaike is widely praised for its beginner-friendly design, with long, gradual slopes that are ideal for building confidence. The scale is great – wide, open runs with plenty of room to move. Above this, the mountain opens into tree skiing, sidecountry gates and backcountry access, if you’re looking for more to explore and you’re suitably back country equipped or with a guide.

Atmosphere

Often described as ‘very Japanese’, Tsugaike has local cultural aspects, try the foot onsens at the mountain base! It’s not about nightlife or scene, it’s where families and those in the know come to focus on skiing.

Spring Skiing

Spring is where Tsugaike really comes into its own. With a base elevation of around 800m and a summit of 1,704metres, the upper mountain holds snow well into late April and often early May.

The near-5km gondola is key, quickly lifting you above the spring base slush to more consistent conditions. Mornings bring clean corduroy before softening into classic spring corn. Spring is less about powder, more about flow, cruisy laps and
soaking up the sunshine.

Park Life

Terrain parks remain active through spring, hike parks are open, and the atmosphere takes on a playful, social energy that’s hard to beat.

Lift Ticket Access

Tsugaike is part of the Hakuba Valley network, with one pass covering multiple resorts. It’s also included on the Epic Pass, offering up to five consecutive days across the valley. Day rates are relatively affordable, with early-bird and online discounts making it even better.

Getting there?
Tsugaike is one of the easiest resorts in Hakuba to access, around 20–30 minutes from the main hubs via shuttle. These buses are included with the Hakuba Valley pass. From Tokyo, allow around 3 to 4 hours via train or bus into the valley.
