Sugar Bowl Express at The Remarkables opens Saturday

snow action team 31.07.2020

The new Sugar Bowl Express chairlift at The Remarkables opens tomorrow, August 1st.

The new lift opens up a whole new set of options as the resort finally gets lifts in the right places – the original lift layout was a ridiculous under utilisation of the terrain available that has been addressed in the multi-million dollar redevelopments of recent years.

The spectacular location, with the base as high as the top at sister resort Coronet Peak opposite, deserves this.

The fact it’s yet another six pac express lift also shows how much New Zealand has been the leader in Southern Hemisphere resort developments over the past few years. The lift is part of nzski.com’s $NZD 35 million transformation of their Queenstown resorts – the Sugar Basin 6 pac got delayed a year after some approval hold ups.

Despite no international visitors – hopes of the ‘Trans-Tasman Bubble’ flight resumption disappearing as Australia’s COVID-19 situation has worsened over the past few weeks – domestic travel in NZ is unrestricted and their ski season has proceeded with more normality than anywhere else this southern winter.

Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said he’s looking forward to being handed the controls on Saturday.

“The Sugar Bowl Express lift has been a few years coming. Since the first concept until today we have experienced a couple of delays but I’m excited skiers and boarders can now enjoy a faster ride and explore the 2.5km of new trails we’ve developed up there.

“We will have the new runs groomed and the Remarks Parks crew have been working hard in the terrain park with a beginner and intermediate jump line.

“We are looking forward to seeing everyone up here on Saturday. There will be first-on-chair celebrations and sweet treats handed out to celebrate the fact we can now get high on Sugar this season,” Lawrence said.

When you can get back over there check it out – we used to traverse and hike into this terrain years ago, it is well worth riding.
