Qantas flights direct to Sapporo

Qantas Launches Seasonal Direct Flights to Sapporo

Max Hobson 24.01.2025

Having just returned from a week in stunning Hokkaido I was stoked to see this announcement drop from Qantas!

For my recent trip, I flew ANA into Tokyo, with a 3 hour lay over and domestic baggage transfer before another 1.5 hour flight to New Chitose. Not what you want after an overnight flight (the common way to fly to Japan).

This announcement means a simple one way hop to Sapporo and easy access to nearly a dozen ski fields including world famous Niseko United, Kiroro and Rusutsu.

Big News for Aussie Snow Fans

Getting to Japan’s famous snowfields just got a whole lot easier. Qantas has announced new direct flights from Sydney to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport, kicking off just in time for the peak ski season. For Aussie skiers and snowboarders, this means faster access to Hokkaido’s legendary dry powder snow and vibrant ski resorts.

The Details You Need to Know

From 15 December 2025 to 28 March 2026, Qantas will operate three flights a week on its Airbus A330-200 fleet, delivering over 20,000 seats across the northern ski season. These flights are set to shave hours off the travel time compared to current one-stop options, so you’ll have more time for runs at Niseko, Furano, Rusutsu, and Kiroro—all easily reachable from Sapporo.

Flights will depart Sydney in the morning and land in Sapporo early evening, letting you hit the slopes the same day. On your way home, you can even sneak in a morning session on the snow before flying back in the evening.

Why Sapporo Should Be on Your Snow Bucket List

Hokkaido’s powder is world-renowned, but the island offers more than just epic skiing and snowboarding. There’s the magical Sapporo Snow Festival, iconic hot springs in Noboribetsu and Jozankei, and buzzing village hubs to explore. It’s a full winter wonderland experience that’s now within easier reach than ever.

Pro Tips for Making the Most of the Season

  • Book Early: Flights will be in high demand, so lock in your tickets and accommodation ASAP.
  • Stay Close: Pick slopeside lodging for maximum time on the powder.
  • Gear Up: Don’t forget to pack your goggles, gloves, and layers—and remember, your gear flies free with Qantas’ baggage allowance.

Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace summed it up best: “We know Sapporo is an extremely popular winter destination for Aussies who love the snow, and we’re excited to make it even easier for them to reach Hokkaido’s world-class ski resorts with a direct flight from Sydney.”
