Inside a Day at a Heli-Ski Lodge
The day begins with a helicopter flight over pristine alpine terrain, revealing endless snow-covered peaks and endless mountain valleys. Pinch-yourself moments in a place few ever reach. The helicopter lands and you step out directly onto the snow. The buzz fades and it’s just a small group in a quiet mountain setting. No crowds or lift lines in sight, just deep, untracked snow. With the helicopter picking you up after each run, it’s continuous skiing and snowboarding. Terrain ranges from cruisy open alpine bowls to steep chutes, pillow drops, and perfectly gladed tree runs, with each day matched to conditions and group ability.
And it’s not just about skiing and snowboarding, although that part is spectacular. There is a special kind of camaraderie among new and old friends in the shared experience of escaping the mundane and moving through remote, untouched landscapes.
Lunch is served in the field, usually in a scenic location depending on conditions. Warm soup or tea, followed by something hearty to refuel for the afternoon. After lunch there is time for more skiing. If legs begin to tire, guides coordinate returns to the lodge as needed.
By late afternoon, the day winds down with a return to the lodge. Guests gather for après-ski appetisers and drinks, local beers, fine wines, and cocktails. Dinner is typically multi-course and served in a relaxed, family-style setting with guests and guides dining together.
A crackling fire, starlit hot tub soaks, and the timeless charm of lodge life. Those that have been lucky enough to experience it know. And as you drift off to sleep, you can’t help but smile – because tomorrow, you’ll wake up and do it all over again.
