Farewell Fred, Mr Stockli Skis Australia Retires

snow action team 21.05.2021

Australia’s ski industry may not be one of the World’s biggest, but it sure has produced plenty of big characters – including Alfred ‘Fred’ Guyer, aka Mr Stoeckli Skis Australia.

Being Swiss, it was natural for Fred to represent the classic Swiss ski brand, which he has done successfully for years. From his small shop in Jindabyne each winter he has also supplied a wealth of knowledge and specialist service.

Who knows how many Inter Schools racers have benefited from his expertise?

It’s hard work running a ski shop in our short seasons, but Fred’s jovial character shone through regardless. He’s always happy for a chat and a few laughs while he works.

Back in 2016 we also caught up with him at the American Ski Industry Association ski tests in Copper Mountain. It was brutally cold, but Fred was working away unfased.

His tips on which skis to try then were spot on, and remained so back here. He was also a key figure on their stand at the massive Denver Trade Show, which shows how highly Stockli rated his expertise. We have been lucky to have him all these years.

Fred has dabbled in another career, he has worked as a Santa he confessed to me a couple of years back. I’m sure he was amazing at that, and if they ever do any more The Santa Clause movies he would just kill it in the lead roll.

But the good news is he will still be around this winter to catch up.

“Our store at 1 Snowy River Avenue will remain open this season, and I’ll be on hand for the opening June long weekend, as I will for most weekends in July and August” he says.

Also good news for those who appreciate great skis, the Stockli brand will continue to grow under new management.

“It’s an exciting time for Stoeckli Ski Australia” Fred continues. “Since 2018 Alpine Sports have been breaking new ground quickly becoming one of Jindabyne’s leading ski, board and sporting retailers.”

“Owners of Alpine Sports, Cameron and Michelle Barton are the drivers behind the exciting new developments, which this week culminated in the acquisition of Stoeckli Ski Australia.”

“For me personally, it’s time to pass the reins to someone younger. However, it’s in the comfort of knowing that Cameron and Michelle’s wealth of knowledge will undoubtedly only enhance the Stoeckli Ski Australia experience.”

That’s for sure. In fact they have are some great specials online now – with 7 Stockli models all at 25% off.

The Stormrider 95 looks about perfect if you ask me ..

Our best wishes to Fred for the future, hope he gets more family time in. Friends should make a point to swing by this winter to catch up.
