Numajiri Kogen Lodge the ultimate mountaineer's retreat

snow action team 16.01.2020

Numajiri Kogen Lodge enjoys a ski in/ski out location at Numajiri Ski Resort, claimed as Japan’s oldest ski area. The Lodge has a unique mountaineering heritage since it was founded by Junko Tabei, the first woman to climb Mt Everest. She had founded the Ladies Climbing Club in 1969, after discovering there wasn’t one in a then very male dominated sport. Their slogan was “Let’s go on an overseas expedition by ourselves” and they certainly did – soon building up to summiting Everest in 1975 on a largely self-funded expedition.

During the climb she survived an avalanche that caught her and three team members in their tent after being pulled out by the ankles by the expedition’s sherpa guides. She recovered to continue the climb and summit two weeks later.

She also became the first woman to complete the 7 summits – scaling the highest peaks of each continent (no, Mt Kosciuzko does not actually qualify, Puncak Jaya in Irian Jaya at 4,484m is the one that counts for ‘Oceania’).

So not surprisingly her beautiful mountain lodge in Bandai Asahi National Park celebrated climbing and mountain life set in the heart of some of Japan’s most beautiful mountain scenery.

It is next to Numajiri Ski Resort, a boutique area ideal for families with small children, and close to more Aizu powder gems like Minowa, Nekoma, Alts Bandai and Grandeco all only 10 – 30km away. For couples and groups who prefer escaping the crowds of western skiers at major resorts and who want to experience real Japanese hospitality it’s a great choice.

There would be few better places to recover from the rigours of an expedition than back here soaking in the therapeutic Nakonasawa Onsen water in Numajiri Lodge’s lovely baths.

After her death in 2016 the lodge closed for a time, but has been refurbished and renewed under the ownership of Ookawaso Ryokan, who have a 60 year tradition of hospitality at Aizu Ashinomaki Onsen.

Enjoy spacious, well appointed rooms, a welcoming lounge and of course, glorious onsen.

Excellent fresh local cuisine is featured daily in the restaurant.
