New Alpine Australia book one for the lodge

snow action team 29.03.2019

Alpine Australia, A celebration of the Australian Alps, is a new coffee table photo essay book that lives up to the title. Sure, Aussies don’t have the World’s most spectacular mountains, but you can’t deny their beauty. Especially when packaged up like this!

Authors/photographers Craig Lewis and Chris Munn have assembled 200 plus pages flowing from Mt Stirling and Buller in Victoria to Jagungal and Kiandra in NSW.

This is no @snowaction production – there’s not a skier or boarder in sight to distract your attention from the innate beauty of our alpine landscapes and their unique vegetation.

One of our favourites is this Feathertop spread from Chris Munn

Who knew snow gums live over 300 years? The lone ‘Summit Tree’ at Mt Stirling apparently has, an example of the random facts you can pick up from the text while enjoying the images.

You can’t help be captivated by them, and Alpine Australia will make a very nice coffee table addition to anyone’s ski chalet, apartment or lodge. Or your waiting rooms all you skiing professionals out there.

It’s the perfect tome to pick up in Autumn as colours change, the sun treks north and the chill closes in. What will another winter bring?

I didn’t miss the lack of snow action at all. The only thing that would have improved it is a few echidnas and wombats – our winter fauna is as unique as the vegetation after all.

On the bright side no selfies! If this was on instagram every beautiful scene would have an influencer stuck in the middle of it .. But no, this is old school quality print, a great effort and something that will last for years.

You can open Alpine Australia randomly and be captivated by a page or several.

Alpine Australia is $49.99 RRP and is available in all good bookstores and online at Booktopia www.booktopia.com.au

The book leaves out Tasmania, which has Australia’s most spectacular glacially sculpted terrain. For a look at that check out or feature last year from our Senior Photographer and back country ski fanatic Shaun Mittwollen here.

Looking at lonely Mt Jagungal, the last peak to breach the 2000m barrier heading north, I can’t help dreaming of a heli assist to ski the bowl .. no chance! It’s earn-your-turns or nothing here © Craig Lewis
